Update: Cambodia Now Accepts All Types of US Dollar Banknotes

Tourists and travelers to Cambodia have long faced challenges when using USD due to strict conditions imposed on the quality of banknotes. Until recently, Cambodian merchants would only accept pristine notes—those free from marks, stains, or slight tears. This led to difficulties for tourists, as damaged or old notes were often rejected or subjected to additional fees.

Why Were USD Notes Rejected?
This practice stemmed from previous banking regulations, which allowed banks to reject damaged notes or deduct fees. As a result, local merchants became selective, accepting only perfect notes from buyers and tourists.

New Guidelines for Accepting US Banknotes
However, on August 2, 2024, the Cambodian Government and the National Bank of Cambodia announced a new rule: All banks must accept any type of US banknote, regardless of condition, without extra charges or fees. The only exception is if the note is counterfeit or unrecognizable.

What This Means for Tourists
While this is a significant change, some local merchants may not yet be fully aware of the new regulation. If you encounter any issues, you can visit a bank to exchange your notes or try shopping at major retailers like supermarkets or shopping malls that are more likely to be updated on the new policy.

Pro Tip: Always carry smaller denominations in good condition when traveling, but rest assured that Cambodia now accepts a wider range of USD notes!
